The United States and Canada are in Group B and will play their round-robin games at Ostravar Arena in Ostrava, along with Russia, Czech Republic and Germany.
Finland, the 2019 tournament winner, will be in Group A, along with Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia and Kazakhstan. It will play its round-robin games at Werk Arena in Trinec.
The top four teams in each group will play in the quarterfinals Jan. 2. The semifinals are Jan. 4, and the championship and third-place games are Jan. 5. The semifinals and finals will be played at Ostravar Arena.
NHL Network will broadcast 20 games live, including the United States playing Canada on Dec. 26 (1 p.m. ET), the first day of the tournament, as well as the semifinals, consolation game and final.
The other three U.S. games in the round-robin portion of the tournament will be carried live on NHL Network, including games against Germany on Dec. 27 (1 p.m. ET), Russia on Dec. 29 (1 p.m. ET) and Czech Republic on Dec. 30 (1 p.m. ET).
Among the players to watch for the United States is goalie Spencer Knight, who was the third goalie on the 2019 WJC team. He was chosen by the Florida Panthers with the №13 pick of the 2019 NHL Draft.
The United States finished second at the 2019 WJC, losing 3–2 against Finland in the championship game at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The United States is looking for a fifth straight top-three finish at the event after winning it in 2017, finishing second in 2019 and third in 2016 and 2018. Prior to its current streak, the United States had consecutive top-three finishes once, in 2010 (first) and 2011 (third).
NHL Network also will provide live coverage of Canada’s round-robin games. After opening against the U.S., Canada plays Russia on Dec. 28 (1 p.m. ET), Germany on Dec. 30 (9 a.m. ET) and Czech Republic on Dec. 31 (1 p.m. ET).
Canada finished sixth at the 2019 WJC but could have the top two prospects for the 2020 NHL Draft on its roster: left wing Alexei Lafreniere of Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and center Quinton Byfield of Sudbury of the Ontario Hockey League. Lafreniere had one goal in five games for Canada at the 2019 tournament.
